Chao Por Khao Yai Festival

« Chao Por Khao Yai » is seen as the spiritual father of Cha-am. It is said that he came to Cha-am as a Chinese emigrant, and impressed because of his knowledge in traditional medicine. Ever since, people make offerings to shrines dedicated to Chao Por Khao Yai, hoping, of course, that their wishes will come true. If you hear drivers honk their horn in the curve leading to the interchange to Bangkok, it’s a salute to Chao Por Khao Yai!

Every year a festival is also taking place, this year from 20 to 24 June 2019. The opening ceremony will be held at noon on the 20th in front of Cha-am train station, followed by a procession throughout Cha-am. At night, fireworks will be displayed, along with dance performances and outdoor movies. The two following days will have traditional ceremonies in the morning, and similar performances at night. On the 23rd, an auction will be held to raise profit for charities. On the night of the 24th, at midnight, the image of Chao Por Khao Yai will be returned to the shrine.
