Cha-Am: general information

Sports and leisure

Cha-am is not just the beach, and if you have kids, if you want to exercise, meet other people or just try something different, there are plenty of activities to choose from.

Also check our pages about Golf, Beach activities, Shopping and Nightlife, and our forum for Darts.

Sports

Karting

There is a karting track in the north of Hua Hin (so that's almost Cha-am!), opposite the airport (take the first u-turn after the airport then turn left). You can arrive and drive, they provide you with helmets and advice for your safety (basically: do not accelerate and brake at the same time, and beware not to touch the hot engine with your right elbow when you get out of the kart). A popular option is 1,000 baht for 26 minutes (two sessions of 13 minutes).

They also have two-seaters!

Fishing parks

There are two popular fishing parks in Cha-am. Cha-am Fishing Park is in the north of Cha-am, on the left hand side of the road to Bangkok, about km 193 (that is about 5 km after the Factory Outlet), opposite a PTT petrol station. It's open from 8:00 am to 08:00 pm and you can rent fishing rods for 400 baht per day (200 baht charge if you bring your own). If you catch some fish you have to release it back into the water. They also have accomodation, bungalows can be rent for 500 baht per day.

Another popular place is Khao Yai Fishing Park, which is closer to Cha-am, on the road leading to Hup Kapong (see our interactive city map for the exact location). It's open from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, you can rent a fishing rod for 160 baht per day (or 80 baht per fishing rod that you bring in). Only fish over 2 kg must be released, smaller ones can be taken away. Food and drinks are not allowed on the premises.

On other days there are also darts and pool competitions. Please check our forum to be informed of the latest events.

Amusement parks

Cha-Am ATV park

Cha-am ATV park has many activities for children, adults and families: you can drive an ATV, go horse riding, organize a paintball game or practice archery. But the main activity is ATV driving. They have 3 tracks for you to practice ("A" being the easiest one, then "B" and "C") and you can also go for a tour in the countryside. To go to the park take the road to Hua Hin, then make a U-turn when you pass the Springfield Beach hotel and the Veranda hotel, and follow the signs. Opens 9am to 6pm, closed on Wednesday.

Black Mountain waterpark

Black Mountain was famous for its golf course, now the name will also be associated to the first waterpark in the area of Cha-am and Hua Hin. It has many sliders, a wave pool, a lazy river, a pool with activities for young children, and an overflowing swimming pool. It's a bit on the expensive side, but it's a great place to take the kids out. It's clean and there are lifeguards on duty at every attraction. Helmets and life jackets are provided for free and required for the tube sliders. Young children are not allowed in the 3 highest sliders, and parents should also beware of the wave pool, as waves are quite strong and triggered intermittently. Food and beverage from outside are not allowed, but there is a restaurant inside, as well as a bar in a swimming pool. Towels and lockers are available for rent. The park is opened from 10am to 5pm, for the exact location please see our interactive city map. There is also a "wakeboard" park, with a separate entrance (and a separate fee !).

Santorini Park

Santorini Park is on the left side of the road in the direction of Bangkok, after the interchange between the road to Hua Hin and the bypass road, and before you reach the Factory Outlet. Just like the Factory Outlet (which is under the same management as Santorini, by the way), Santorini Park has shops for several brands, but also a few attractions, like a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round or a reverse bungee jumping for those who like thrills. Attractions are quite expensive (120 baht for a 5 minute ride in the merry-go-round, for instance) and there is an entry charge (50 baht per person). With its Greek style architecture and a setting designed so that visitors can take pictures of themselves at every corner, the park is in the same vein as all the "exotic" resorts that can be found in other popular holiday destinations for Thai people, like Suan Peung or Khao Yai. Overall, Santorini is overpriced and there are not enough attractions to make it a real amusement park for kids. As for the shopping, the Factory Outlet is just 1 or 2 kilometers away and doesn't charge an entry fee.

Swiss Sheep Farm

Opened in July 2012, it's the latest addition to Cha-am attractions. It's a park of about 20 rais, with animals in a western-like farm settings. It's called the Swiss Sheep Farm, but with an old Dodge rusting in the sun, an English phone booth and a Dutch windmill, you feel more like you are in a Thai park filled with random western clichés! The main activity is to enter the sheep fold and feed the sheep with grass, or bottle-feed a calf. There are also a few rides for small children, and a restaurant. Just like Santorini Park, the Swiss Sheep Farm is one of those trendy, "exotic" places where Thai people like to stop on the way to their holiday destination, to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. The children will love it too, but don't expect an educational trip, as nothing is said about sheep-farming, shearing or dairy produce.

The Swiss Sheep Farm is on Phetkasem road (highway #4) at kilometer 201, on the left side of the road when coming from Bangkok, just before the PTT gas station and 500 meters before the fork to Cha-am and Hua Hin on the left (straight being the bypass to Pranburi). Open everyday from 10am to 7pm. Admission fee 50 bahts for adults, 30 bahts for children.
