Mocca at Hua Hin Jazz Festival

I took my Dad along to the Jazz Festival last night in Hua Hin. We took a walk on Damnoern Kasem road (half of it was closed and full of stalls), then went to check the two stages. At the beach there was a DJ scratching vinyl, which I found a bit strange for a jazz festival, but quickly enough he left the stage to Popsanova, a Brazilian band. It was OK, but there were only 4 of them on stage, the drums and background vocals having been pre-recorded, and it lacked energy. I suspect the drummer drew the short straw when it came to the distribution of plane tickets! So we just had one drink and we moved to the second stage.

An Indonesian band was playing there, Mocca. For some reason I didn’t expect much from an Indonesian band, but they were just great. The singer had a beautiful voice, and between the songs she was speaking (in perfect English) and joking with the audience, even trying out a song in Thai. There were not many people, as everybody was on the beach, but she had them clap their hands and sing along in no time. The style was swing, I guess, and at times it reminded me of Bjork.

If you wish you had seen Mocca, don’t worry, they are still here tonight! They will perform at 9pm, at the beach this time, joining Doobadoo (a famous Thai band) on stage for a jam session. Doobadoo will start at 7pm, and then Shakatak will finish the show from 10.30pm to midnight.
